There are certain things you should be aware of prior to programming your own key fob. The first thing to know is that the programming process is different for different models of cars.

Most modern cars have an immobilizer system. If you don't have the original key for the car, it will not be able to start the car.

Keyless Entry System

Keyless entry systems make your car more comfortable to drive, and could make you feel safer. It lets you open doors and start the engine without having to reach for keys. The system utilizes radio frequencies to connect the key fobs with the car's receiver. The process is fairly easy and doesn't require any special equipment or previous experience.


When you press the button on your key fob, the key fob sends a 40-bit signal to a receiver in your vehicle. The receiver matches that code to a function code that tells it what to do, such as opening the doors or opening the windows. The system is designed to stop others from using your key fob to unlock your vehicle, because each transmitter has its unique code.

Modern cars are equipped with systems that automatically lock the car after you have walked away from it. This can be useful if you are prone to forgetting things or are worried about leaving your vehicle unattended. However, these systems have some drawbacks, for instance, the possibility for thieves to hack into them.

There are a variety of issues that can cause the keyless entry system as well as remote starter to fail properly. The most common cause is a dead battery inside your key fob. You can replace the battery if it is the issue. If this doesn't solve the issue, you might require having your fob programmed again.

Keyless Start System

This technology lets drivers start their engines without requiring an electronic key. Instead, the fob sends an access code to the console which unlocks a number of electrical switches to activate the engine, causing it to start. Once the engine has begun the fob's button will be pressed in order to shut it off.

The system also features security features to prevent the car from beginning in gear, or when someone is not in the vicinity of the steering column. The computer will ensure that the transmission is in Park and the brake pedal is engaged prior to it can start the car. It can also be programmed to demand a certain sequence of presses.

As with other modern smart keys, Suzuki's key fob is an electronic device that communicates with the car by radio frequency. The transmitter is integrated into the fob and its signal is picked by antennas inside and outside of the vehicle. These antennas, which are similar to those used by door locks, enable the car to know when the fob is within of the range. Once the receivers detect a signal, they deactivate the immobilizer, which allows the engine to turn like a regular key.

Keyless Remote Control

If your key fob does not work, it could be a physical issue such as damaged battery connector contacts or button. It could also have an issue with software that requires the reprogramming. Simple tests with a multimeter or voltmeter will determine if the battery is fully charged and capable of running the microprocessor in the remote.

Modern key fobs utilize RFID (radio-frequency identification) to communicate with the computer of the vehicle. They transmit a digital identity code, and the car computer saves this code so that the key fob will be able to unlock and start the car.

Key fobs emit a signal in the same radio frequency as a cellphone and this technology can be used to remotely control certain car systems, like power lift gates or even to start the engine from outside the car. Fobs emit loud sounds to dissuade thieves and unwanted guests.

Batteries are the most common reason for the fob's function not being working. Follow a few easy steps to reprogram the fob if this is the case.

Immobilizer

As you might guess from the name, the Immobilizer prevents the engine of the vehicle from starting without the key fob present. The system uses LF (low frequency 125 kHz) transmitting antennas inside and outside of the vehicle that are activated by key fob's button press or when its handle is pulled. The transponder chip in the key fob transmits its identification back to the vehicle. The module that knows that the vehicle's identification compares the key fob's ID with the one stored in the BCM and if they are compatible, the vehicle will start.

This system is very effective at deterring most carjackers, though it does not protect against the more technologically-advanced thieves. In a recent article, security researcher Bokslag was able to hack three popular immobilizers of car brands within ten minutes of getting keys.

Most older vehicles have the less reliable, simpler version of this system.  G28CarKeys  utilizes one code that is personal, which is permanent as well as a second code that changes each time the ignition key is turned. Newer vehicles use an advanced, electronically-controlled Engine Immobilizer system that features two-tier security.

You'll need the 7-digit SKC (Skip Key Code), which is specific to your vehicle, to reprogramme a key. This number is obtained from the dealer when you purchase a new Key Fob. You'll also require the Workshop Code and Importer Number. The Immobilizer system will not be affected by a battery disconnect, but you will need the correct diagnostic tools in order to reprogram the Transponder ECU within the Key Fob.
